The following are articles written by ladies who attended the "Sex, and the Soul of a Woman" Conference.  These were not solicited comments but very much appreciated.
This past Monday’s (March 19, 2007) front page of the Daily Herald reported on two events of the past weekend.  First was the opening of Faith House in Enfield.  This is definitely a much-needed addition to our community.  Gloria Caudle, her family, the many volunteers all deserve  congratulations for having a vision and a dream and supporting each other until that dream was fulfilled. The other major article on the front page was also a very important ecological concern dealing with hog farms and waste produced by those farms.  This too is a news worthy topic and needs to be kept on the front burner for citizens and legislators alike to not just be aware of but to deal with and protect our environment and our citizens.

I would like to add however that there was another news worthy event that took place this weekend in our community.  It was a marvelous well-attended absolutely awe-inspiring event. The event I am referring to was a Women’s Conference on the subject of casual sex.  Noted Christian author and counselor, Paula Rinehart, discussed with the better than 250 women the societal ills and the personal struggles that are the result of what we often, in today’s language, refer to as recreational sex.  The conference reached out to young women, divorcees, mothers and daughters, women of all ages and all walks of life.  Young women in their early teen up to senior citizens attended this conference.  It was truly a heart-warming experience to spend the day with Christian women who had come together in a true sense of community to empower, to be empowered, to address ourselves, and to address this social ill of our society.
The conference was held at Davie Middle School and was free to all who attended.  A love offering was taken and split between Hannah’s Place and The Pregnancy Support Center.
In my opinion this conference was a glimpse of the true strength of the Roanoke Valley shining bright.  Numerous area churches of all denominations sponsored the conference, which included a wide variety of racial and ethnic congregations.  The day opened with prayer and Music by the United Voices for Christ: God’s Choir, directed by Augustus Cofield.  The half-time show featured local teens performing hip-hop and Christian Rap.  Paula Rinehart spoke frankly and honestly about sex and shared scripture that opened the door to communication regarding a women’s sexuality.  We even had our own special version of The View, which lent itself to questions from the audience, and discussion of the issues.  The entire day was embraced with love, prayer and cooperation.  It was a day of openness and frankness but also a day with no judgments or put-downs.

I just wanted to be sure that this news worthy event was given print space.  I wanted to thank all of those who attended, the many volunteers who participated, the churches who sponsored the event, the women who had a vision and recognized a need and stepped up and said, if we put it together they will come.  And yes, they came and they were blessed.  From the early moments of the day to the very end it was just an awesome and all inspired day.  Contrary to what some believe and spew this community is strong and this conference is proof that we can come together in the spirit of love and conquer old stereotypes as we continue to build a our community.

Women from local churches to present conference

Katy Nicholson Herald Staff Writer

ROANOKE RAPIDS - Teen pregnancy rates and domestic violence have been in the headlines lately, and some local women have decided to do something about it.  When Katie Williams read “Sex and the Soul of a Woman: The Reality of Love and Romance in an Age of Casual Sex,” by Paula Rinehart, the recently-married 27-year-old found a profound connection with the book's message.  Barbara Walls, a 54-year-old who has been divorced and now has been happily married for 23 years, and Caroline Long, a 50-year-old who has never been married, also read the book and were able to relate to it.

They have organized a conference for women of all ages and faiths to promote self-respect as well as abstinence until marriage, and Rinehart, a Christian counselor from Raleigh, will be there to give a presentation. The conference, which will be held Saturday, March 17 from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at William R. Davie Middle School, is free to the public.  At an organizational meeting last Thursday attended by women from about 15 different churches, Walls explained that though the conference will have a Christian theme, it is open to everyone.

“We have ladies who are coming who may have no idea about Jesus Christ and they just want to talk, so we need to just let them talk,” she said.

Also included in the conference will be four personal testimonies, an interview session with Rinehart, music and prayer. Each woman will receive information and the opportunity to visit booths provided by the Pregnancy Support Center, Halifax Regional Medical Center's HIV/AIDS program, Hannah's Place, New Beginnings, and Not Me, Not Now. All who attend will receive a free lunch.  Organizers hope women will bring their daughters to the conference. Though the conference is recommended for women ages 12 and up, younger girls are encouraged to attend if their parents think it is appropriate.

“There are a lot of things I think women don't know how to discuss with their daughters, because it's been in the closet so long and it's just taboo,” explained organizer Linda McRae.

Churches also have a responsibility to help guide young women, Walls said.“We don't want to talk about sex in the pulpit, but it's in their faces, it's in schools, it's in the magazines,” she said.  Though 770 seats will be available, Walls said women should pre-register for the conference at www.spiritualspa.net .  To make donations for the conference, call Barbara Walls at 308-9480 or Katie Williams at 537-2218.
